Artex Removal
Artex is a water-based covering, usually used to decorate ceilings, and generally brought to a textured finish with the use of a brush or roller. It can be removed using a variety of different methods, but they're all a slow and laborious processes which, if done incorrectly, can damage plasterboard ceilings. It's far easier to plaster over it.We offer artex removal services covering the Rode Heath, Alsager, Kidsgrove, Middlewich, Northwich, Sandbach, Knutsford, Holmes Chapel, Congleton and Cheshire areas.
Artex is no longer as popular as it used to be and flat ceilings and walls are now the preference. According to estate agents, although artex does not specifically de-value a property, buyers tend to favour properties with flat ceilings and walls.
Artex Removal Methods
There are essentially three options to remove artex.
The first option is to 'steam the artex off' but this option has it's disadvantages. Although the ceiling is left flat, steamers can cause the underlying plaster to blow or crack. There is also no guarantee as to what condition the original plaster is in. It is quite common for artex to have been used to cover up rough ceilings.
The second option is to plaster over the artex. This option guarantees that the finished surface will be smooth and you haven't had to spend a day steaming the artex off in the first instance.
The third option is to board over the existing ceiling and then skim. This can be a slightly more expensive option due to the increased cost of plasterboard.
When plastering over artex ceilings, the artex usually dictates the type and amount of plaster to be used. Modern artex patterns can usually be skimmed over using two coats of finishing plaster. Older artex often requires a bonding coat first, followed by two coats of finishing plaster.Assuming the Artex has been professionally applied in the first place and does not protrude too much, plastering over Artex will offer the smoothest of finishes - far smoother than you could achieve with any other approach.
